When we’re looking for a relaxed Southern California seaside town minus the overwhelming crowds that define so many San Diego and Los Angeles beaches, Oceanside is our top choice. It’d be an overstatement to call this town North County’s best-kept secret, but it does feel fair to call Oceanside underappreciated.

Located just 15 minutes—30 with traffic—from LEGOLAND California in Carlsbad, Oceanside also serves as the perfect, low-stress home base for families planning a theme park weekend.

Here’s our kid-friendly guide on how to spend 36 easygoing hours soaking up the sun, harbor views, and local food in Oceanside.

Day 1: Saturday Evening

Check-in and Harbor Views

After a day on the road (or at LEGOLAND California), head straight to Oceanside Harbor Village. Dotted with restaurants, stores, and ice cream shops, the marina features two miles of pedestrian walkways that are flat, wide, and stroller friendly. Walk along the marina to spot docked sailboats and watch the resident sea lions lounging nearby.

Joe's Crab Shack is always our first stop in Oceanside.

Casual Seafood at Joe’s Crab Shack

For an easy, family-friendly dinner with direct sunset views over the water, grab a table at Joe’s Crab Shack. Admittedly a guilty pleasure, this is not fine dining. But the children’s menu is budget friendly, the drink list is extensive, and the harbor-facing patio lets you decompress while catching the last light of the day. Fair warning: The wait may be on the longer side so plan ahead with activities to keep the kids entertained or plans to play some “I Spy” on the marina.

Day 2: Sunday

Morning: Harbor Village Walk + Breakfast

  • Breakfast at Stratford at the Harbor

Start your morning back at Oceanside Harbor Village. The adorable Stratford at the Harbor is a local staple with outdoor patio seating right on the water. We enjoy getting in a solid morning walk around the harbor—and maybe a coffee to sip along the way—before we get in the queue for breakfast.

Note: This is a popular brunch spot, so call ahead to find out the current estimated wait time.

Our top menu picks: Buttermilk pancakes for the kids, the Chunky Monkey acai bowl for something fresh, or the Lobster Benedict for a weekend splurge.

Harbor Beach & San Luis Rey River Trail

Harbor Beach is the city’s largest and most equipped beach, but there’s nothing about it that we find overwhelming. Rather, it’s a spot where we can enjoy the full suite of amenities and still have a low-key day on the beach.

  • Amenities: Restrooms, outdoor showers, fire pits, volleyball courts, a playground, and a mix of paid and free parking lots.

  • Quick detour: Walk the edge where the San Luis Rey River Trail meets the ocean; it is an ideal, calm spot for shallow wading and watching egrets and blue herons.

Afternoon: Historic Pier & Coastal Sightseeing

Oceanside Pier Walk

Head south toward the historic Oceanside Pier. Stretching nearly 2,000 feet, it is one of the longest wooden piers on the West Coast. It’s also a sign of the resilience of the community, having been destroyed and rebuilt on more than one occasion. Walk out over the Pacific to watch local anglers, catch panoramic views of the surf line, and scan the horizon for seasonal whale spouts. (You can view a list of what to see when here.) We’ll admit that we’re still mourning the loss of Ruby’s Diner, an American classic, but there are plenty of dining options in the area to choose from for lunch.

Shoreline Bike Ride or Surf Museum

  • Rent cruiser bikes or a family surrey near the pier to ride along the strand. Looking for something more ambitious? You can do a self-guided tour of city’s vibrant murals. Preview a gallery of what you’ll see here.

  • Have surfers in the family? Take a short walk downtown to visit the California Surf Museum; you’ll get to enjoy some murals along Mission Avenue, too.

Evening: Coal-Fired Pizza

Dinner at The Privateer Coal Fire Pizza

Wrap up your stay with dinner in South Oceanside at the Privateer. Pizzas here are made in a 7-foot, 6,500-pound coal-fired oven that gives the Neapolitan-style pies a perfect char and smokiness. The Chemistry Pie is a classic pepperoni and sausage with peppers, onions, mushrooms, and olives. Feeling a little wild? Consider the Cassidy, which combines pineapple, jalapeños, and pepperoni.
