While it can be disconcerting to watch your Target transition from summer to Christmas seemingly overnight, we’re here to say that we don’t mind a theme park’s pivot to fall fun post Labor Day. It’s way too easy to miss the hayride on Halloween festivities, and we appreciate SeaWorld San Antonio’s mid-September launch of Howl-O-Scream, especially as it marks a milestone 25th year.

Look out for information about a special nighttime show during the Halloween season.

Running on select dates through November 1, the park is pulling out all the stops with a massive lineup of retro throwbacks, brand-new mazes, and atmospheric scare zones.

If you are planning a family getaway to the Alamo City this autumn, here is your definitive guide to tackling Howl-O-Scream’s silver anniversary—from its daytime treats to nighttime thrills—with the family in tow.

2 Events in 1 at SeaWorld San Antonio: When the Clock Strikes 7

The single most critical detail every parent needs to know is SeaWorld’s clear day-to-night operational split:

  • Daytime (Park Open to 7 P.M.) — SeaWorld Spooktacular: This portion of the day is 100% kid friendly. Little ones can wear costumes, follow the trick-or-treat trail, dance along at festive parties, and meet friendly Halloween characters alongside the usual SeaWorld animal exhibits, presentations, and rides.

  • Nighttime (7 P.M. to Park Close) — Howl-O-Scream: At 7 p.m. sharp, the park shifts tone dramatically. Fog machines flood the midways, scare actors emerge in intense prosthetics, and the mature horror begins. (Note: This transition is more dramatic once it starts to get dark earlier in the evening.)

Families walk toward a towering roller coaster at sunset, with palm trees, glowing clouds, and a child in a wagon.
Come 7 p.m., the park transitions from a kiddo-friendly environment to one more focused on frights.

Because regular daytime admission includes Howl-O-Scream, you do not need to purchase a separate evening ticket. If you have toddlers, preschoolers, or sensitive kids, treat 7 p.m. as your cue to head back to the hotel for a swim or early bedtime. If you have older kids and adrenaline junkies, that is when the real adventure starts.

What’s New for the 25th Anniversary: Howl-O-Scream’s Haunted Lineup

To honor a quarter-century of frights, SeaWorld unlocked its vault of nostalgic horror with brand-new maze concepts and anniversary specials designed to push the envelope:

  • I Know What You Did Last Summer: The Final Catch: A major headliner for the 25th anniversary, this maze brings the iconic late-'90s slasher to life. Yes, millennials, it was THAT LONG AGO. Teens and parents alike will face the vengeful fisherman in his slicker, navigating foggy coastal docks, damp corridors, and tight corners.

  • Witch of the Woods: A folk-horror nightmare set deep within a cursed forest where dark magic, twisting branches, and cloaked disciples lurk in the shadows.

  • Dead Wreckoning: A maritime disaster maze set inside a wrecked vessel torn apart by cursed madness, mutiny, and undead sailors.

  • Dis-Assembly Line & The Swamp: Fan-favorite returning mazes that amp up mechanical body horror and bayou-dwelling sorcery.

  • Terror Through Time (Anniversary Special): Designed specifically for the 25th anniversary, this walk-through experience serves as a nostalgic retrospective, pulling together iconic villains, monsters, and set pieces from the past 25 years of park haunts.

Navigating the Terror-Tories: What Parents Need to Know

Scare zones—dubbed “Terror-tories”—fill the main outdoor walkways connecting the rides and mazes. Because you cannot easily avoid them once the sun sets, prepare your crew for the vibes and scare levels in each zone:

  • Terror Through Time: A greatest-hits portal celebrating 25 years of park history with classic creatures. Startle level: Moderate.

  • Nightmare Midway: A twisted carnival packed with distorted games and sinister jesters. Startle level: High (skip if anyone in your group deals with coulrophobia; the creepy clowns are everywhere).

  • Ripper Row: Cobblestone Victorian London streets stalked by the Ripper and eerie townsfolk. Startle level: Moderate.

  • Colleen's Dollhouse: An unsettling zone featuring cracked-porcelain dolls with following eyes and jerky movements. Startle level: High.

  • Water's Edge & Blackwater Bayou: Sunken pirates, murky waters, and amphibious swamp creatures lurking near the lagoon paths. Startle level: Moderate to High.

  • SINdustry & Till Death Do Us Party: High-energy zones featuring acrobats, loud music, and dark comedy rather than pure nightmare fuel. Startle level: Low to Moderate.

Survival Strategies for Traveling Families

Come earlier in the day to mix in Halloween fun with favorite stops, like feeding the sea lions.

1. Match the Experience to Your Kids' Ages

  • Ages 0–9: Stick exclusively to the daytime Spooktacular. Enjoy trick-or-treating, animal presentations, and daytime coaster rides, then exit before the 7 p.m. sirens sound. If you are thinking about staying, play close attention to your kids’ responses and be ready to pivot. Don’t push them beyond what they’re ready to experience.

  • Ages 10–12 (Tweens): Gauge their bravery. Tweens often love the outdoor atmosphere and live shows like Monster Stomp, but full indoor haunted houses like Witch of the Woods might push sensitive kids over the edge.

  • Teens (13+): This event is built for them. They will love the scare-actor interactions, the horror-movie nostalgia, and night-riding coasters like Steel Eel and Texas Stingray.

2. Take Advantage of Coasters in the Dark

Lines for major roller coasters frequently thin out during Howl-O-Scream because most crowds funnel straight toward the haunted house queues. Riding high-speed coasters in pitch darkness with park fog swirling beneath the track is one of the best ways for thrill-seeking families to spend the night.

3. Consider Upgrades to Skip the Wait

October weekends get exceptionally busy. If your family’s goal is to hit every haunted house before closing without meltdowns, look into the Fear Pass or Fear Pass Plus upgrades. These grant front-of-the-line privileges to the haunted houses and select coasters, saving you hours of waiting in line with tired kids.

4. Know Park Rules Before You Pack

  • No Adult Costumes: SeaWorld allows children to wear costumes during daytime Spooktacular hours, but guests older than 12 are strictly prohibited from wearing masks or full costumes to avoid confusion with park scare actors.

  • Scare Actor Boundaries: Scare actors will jump, scream, and sneak up on you, but they are strictly instructed not to touch guests—and guests must never touch the actors. Remind excited kids to give the performers space.

SeaWorld San Antonio’s 25th Howl-O-Scream celebration offers a rare, flexible fall vacation: a bright, sunny marine adventure by day that pivots into a premier, adrenaline-fueled scream park by night. Plan around the 7 p.m. transition, prioritize your must-see mazes, and you will create a Halloween trip your kids will talk about for years to come.
