If you thought goat yoga was extreme, it’s time to buckle up. Over the last handful of years there’s seemingly been an explosion of all kinds of cuddly therapy, whether it’s puppies, a baby petting zoo, or even cow therapy.

Known in the Netherlands as koe knuffelen (literally “cow hugging”), the practice of spending quiet, intentional time snuggling thousand-pound bovines has grown into a global wellness trend.

And, in a fast-paced environment dominated by screens, deadlines, and stressful stories about screens and their effects on all of us, more folks are turning to the comforts of cows.

We’re not making this up, people.

We had the opportunity to experience this firsthand while on the Big Island in Hawaii (more on that in a minute). And it got us thinking about the experiences others can—and do—seek out across the globe. The following includes a mix of what we’ve gotten to enjoy ourselves and what we’re reading about on Instagram, just like so many of you.

Come for the photos. Stay for the Instagram feeds we’ll list at the bottom.

Now, back to our research.

Known in the Netherlands as koe knuffelen (literally “cow hugging”), the practice of spending quiet, intentional time snuggling thousand-pound bovines has grown into a global wellness trend. Cows naturally have a slower heart rate and a warmer resting body temperature (around 101.5°F or 38.6°C) than humans. (The heart rate fact is similar to why equine therapy is so often recommended.) All that to say, resting against a placid, chewing cow can lower cortisol, boost oxytocin, and induce a grounded state of mindfulness that no meditation app can quite replicate. It’s also good for the 'Grams.

So, if you’re looking to trade city noise for soft fur and rhythmic breathing, here are four standout destinations where you can experience the gentle magic of cow hugging firsthand.

1. Krishna Cow Sanctuary — Big Island, Hawaii

This is where we got our first dose of cow therapy. Tucked away along the lush slopes of the Big Island, the Krishna Cow Sanctuary offers an experience that merges animal welfare, spiritual reverence, and tropical beauty.

Rooted in the Vedic tradition of ahimsa (nonviolence) and deep respect for all living creatures, this sanctuary provides a lifetime haven for rescued cows, bulls, and calves. Here, cows are regarded not as livestock, but as sentient family members entitled to safety, love, and dignified aging.

Visitors can book guided cuddle sessions where they can brush soft coats, stroke velvety ears, and sit side-by-side in verdant pastures with gentle giants. The tranquil Hawaiian breeze, combined with the sanctuary’s serene ethos, makes an afternoon here deeply restorative.

  • Best For: Travelers seeking a soulful, mindful retreat steeped in spiritual respect and tropical tranquility.

  • Watch Out: These are real animals, and they do go to the bathroom … everywhere. On our stay, we may have found ourselves sitting in some decidedly warm pee.

2. Mountain Horse Farm — Naples, New York

Nestled in the rolling hills of the Finger Lakes region, Mountain Horse Farm was one of the earliest pioneers to popularize cow cuddling in the United States.

The farm offers private Horse & Cow Experience sessions with their resident herd, which includes friendly Scottish Highland cows and native draft horses. Highland cattle, famous for their shaggy bangs and calm demeanor, are particularly fond of chin scratches and long, lazy brush-downs. Guests are guided through mindful interaction exercises designed to foster mutual trust before settling into a warm, rhythmic embrace in the pasture.

  • Best For: A rustic, luxury farm-stay experience paired with regional wine tours and scenic lake views.

3. The Gentle Barn — California, Missouri, and Tennessee

With three locations across the United States, The Gentle Barn is one of the most celebrated animal rescue organizations in North America. Founded with the mission of "teaching people kindness and compassion to animals, each other, and the planet," the sanctuary specializes in therapeutic animal interactions.

Many of the cows here were rescued from neglect or factory farming, rehabilitated, and now serve as ambassadors of healing. The Gentle Barn hosts dedicated cuddle therapy (you can purchase the book Cow Hug Therapy) sessions where guests are invited to wrap their arms around rescued cows, rest their heads against broad flanks, and share a quiet moment of emotional connection.

  • Best For: Families and individuals looking to support extensive rescue operations while experiencing deeply empathetic animal interactions.

4. Kastanje Hoeve — Beets, The Netherlands

To experience the trend at its cultural source, head to the pastoral countryside of North Holland. At Kastanje Hoeve, a traditional family-run dairy farm, the art of koe knuffelen is treated as an authentic celebration of rural living. (You'll want to translate the site to English, most likely.)

A typical visit begins with a farm tour and a warm cup of coffee, followed by an introduction to the herd. Once a cow chooses to lie down, guests are shown how to gently approach, sit against its warm flank, and sync their breathing to the animal’s steady rhythm.

Best For: Purists who want to experience authentic Dutch agricultural tradition in its original landscape.

Tips Before You Go

  • Book Well in Advance: Cow cuddling sessions are intentionally kept small to prevent overwhelming the animals, meaning slots often book weeks or months ahead.

  • Dress for the Farm: Wear sturdy, closed-toe boots and durable clothes you don’t mind getting dusty or covered in stray hairs.

  • Let the Cow Lead: Authentic cow cuddling operates on the animal's terms. The best hugs happen when you approach calmly, move slowly, and allow the cow to invite you into its personal space.

Disclaimer: We said it before, and we'll say it again. We visited the Big Island location but only researched the other sites.
