A Perfect Fall Day in Eugene, Oregon
Updated: Sep 5
There's nothing like fall in Eugene, Oregon. In a town so often drenched by rainfall, the fall is a uniquely wonderful time to visit the Emerald City. There's football (Go Ducks!), leaves gently turning orange, and temperatures that invite you to spend time outside, exploring the college town and all that it offers.

In honor of football season, we want to take a moment to outline a perfect Saturday in the city. We've set an ambitious itinerary for the family, but you can pick and choose what works for you—and any combination will result in a memorable day.
Game day is big in Eugene, and you'll want to ensure you're properly outfitted in green and yellow. Eugene has proved a favorite of College Game Day, but regardless of whether a big network is in town, football Saturdays start early ... and you'll want to plan ahead of you've included restaurants or anything that requires finding parking near Autzen Stadium, home of the Ducks.
That said, relish don't rush through Eugene. Give yourself time to enjoy solid bites, local treasures, and laid-back Oregon energy.
This itinerary is built around a full day in town, with stops at the Original Pancake House on Broadway, Smith Family Bookstore, Hendricks Park, Café Yumm!, Prince Puckler’s, a football game, and Bao Bao House. It works best for a home game day, but the same route can carry the spirit of football season even if you are watching from a bar, a friend’s house, or just soaking up the city.
Breakfast on Broadway
The Original Pancake House on Broadway is just as much a Eugene tradition as Oregon Football. And you'll feel the fandom as soon as you enter the restaurant; Oregon memorabilia adorns the walls, and you're likely to recognize notables throughout the restaurant.
Specialities include an apple-cinnamon sugar pancake, homemade corned beef hash, and our personal favorite: the special-order Dutch baby pancakes.

Select a meal that can carry you through walking, cheering, and the long stretch between kickoff and dinner. Even the oatmeal and cream of wheat feel special here; they're served with cream!
If the game is later in the day, do not rush breakfast. Let the morning stretch out. Broadway puts you close enough to downtown that the day can unfold naturally afterward.
More Trees and Books, Please
Have time before an afternoon kickoff? Consider a trip to Smith Family Bookstore or Hendricks Park.
The Ultimate Escape: Smith Family Bookstore
Delbert and Misa Smith began Smith Family Bookstore in 1974, and it's been a part of countless family traditions since then. As the website shares, the husband and wife "began with two simple ideas: book stores should be welcome places for all kinds of readers and good used books should be affordable." The family has held on to those beliefs and offerings across decades and different locations.
While the University of Oregon location closed at the end of 2019, you can still experience the power of books and family at its 525 Willamette Street location (across from the Post Office). There's a mix of new and used books—and you can also sell your own copies to the store—but the real joy here is getting lost in the stacks, wandering through manga, history, romance, cookbooks, and more.
Visit, and you'll be tempted to start your own family tradition with many return visits to follow.
A Walk in the Park: Hendricks on the Hill
Eugene is also known as Track Town USA, and a visit to the Steve Prefontaine memorial near Hendricks Park is a must for runners when they're in town. Whatever brings you to the hill, plan some time to explore the park, one of Eugene’s classic green spaces known for its mature trees, winding paths, and peaceful feel.
The rhododendron garden is an easy stroll, and it features thousands of species. Treat the park as a place to breathe, stretch your legs, and get your mind ready for the rest of the day.
The best football Saturdays in Eugene are not only about the game. They are about letting the city set the pace before kickoff.
Some Yumm in Your Tum
By early afternoon, the day starts to tilt toward football. This is when you want food that feels satisfying but not heavy enough to slow you down.

Café Yumm! Is an Easy Pre-Game Meal in Eugene
Our love of Café Yumm! is well documented. And with multiple locations throughout the city, it's easier to find an open table here than, say, the Wild Duck or sports bar downtown.
The family-friendly menu keeps things simple and healthy, and quesadillas are an easy win with kids. We're partial to the Edamame Yumm Bowl (pictured), but family favorites also include the straightforward quesadillas and teriyaki chicken and rice.
'Puckle' Is a Verb
The gourmet ice cream shop Prince Puckler’s is such a part of the Oregon identity that President Barack Obama visited it during his Eugene stop. And on summer and fall days, a visit to the shop feels like the purest act of self-care. On any day, it's a lovely treat. On game day, it's a good way to satiate cravings with quality before getting tempted by stadium offerings.
You can eat inside the shop, which is located just down the street from Hayward Field and Matthew Knight Arena, or walk around back to the Agate Playground for ice cream on the swings.
Football Fun
At some point, the itinerary gives way to the game. That is how it should be. And we'll leave a guide to Autzen Stadium for another day. But rest assured you're sure to stay dry ... because it never rains in Autzen Stadium!
A Bao Bao Nightcap
Assuming the game ends at a decent time—and that might be a big assumption—we're fans of ending the day with one last solid meal. In recent years, we've become big fans of Bao Bao House. They have two locations (one in Eugene, one in Springfield), and we're partial to the small spot on West Park.
Here you'll find dumplings, bao, noodles, and warm savory dishes that make sense after hours of cheering outside. This is a restaurant that turns out authentic dishes with bold flavors, once you'd often have to travel to a larger city to find.

Fall in Eugene is, indeed, a special experience. We hope you've enjoyed this guide.
