Fall is a magical time in the state of Oregon and the city of Eugene, where football fans famously brag that “It never rains in Autzen Stadium.” Indeed, the fall months are a perfect time to enjoy warmer temps and sometimes-drier weather in between Big Ten games. Oregon alumni fly in from all over the country for the games, and it’s worth taking advantage of the seasonal fineness to explore some of the natural wonder of the Willamette Valley.

Here we highlight three family-friendly trails to stretch those legs after a long plane ride or car drive.
Alton Baker Nature Loop
Located right next to Autzen Stadium, this 3.3-mile loop is paved and gravel based, making it easy for walkers and those with pups or strollers. You’ll enjoy views of the Willamette River. Bring a picnic basket for lunch, and you can refill it with berries that you pick on the way home.

The 209-acre preserve is a favorite of Eugene families, and its trails are basically a rite of passage for children. Rain starts to pick up in November, and it’s best to get out on these trails when they’re dry, so plan for a summer or early fall visit. There are multiple trails to choose from, including some optimized for more accessibility. The so-called “Barrier Free” loop goes through a variety of habitats; there are some narrow paths and limited elevation gains.

The city’s oldest park, Hendricks Park features a celebrated rhododendron garden (more than 6,000 varieties!), native plant garden, and 80 acres of nature to explore. It’s a favorite of runners, hikers, birders, and track enthusiasts who make the pilgrimage to honor the late runner Steve Prefontaine at Pre’s Rock. Bring the stroller and little ones to walk through the paved rhododendron garden or take to the trails to admire the 200 year-old Douglas fir trees, wildflowers, and ferns that make this such a special destination
