Oregon just may be one of the most underrated family travel destinations in the country. This northwest state has everything: waterfall hikes and treks through the forest; charming coastal towns with lighthouses, whale watching, clam chowder, and more; desert terrains with caves to explore; rivers to innertube; and culturally rich towns and experiences like the popular Shakespeare Festival.

Two hands hold pink and vanilla ice cream cones against a bright blue sky.

Here we spotlight a super-sweet and maybe surprising destination for the whole dairy-loving family: The Tillamook Creamery, where families can tour the factory, sample ice cream and cheese, and grab souvenirs for the road. This coastal Oregon company boasts a rich history that dates back more than 100 years.

Here we highlight five ways for the family to enjoy the Tillamook Creamery.

1. The Self-Guided Viewing Gallery

You can choose your own adventure at the Tillamook Creamery, and we recommend you start by heading upstairs to walk the elevated observation deck, which overlooks the working production facility.

What kids love: Watching giant blocks of cheddar move along conveyor belts, get wrapped, and be inspected by real workers.

What moms love: You’ll find plenty of photo opps throughout the museum

Tip: Production schedules vary; weekdays generally offer the best chance to see full packaging lines in motion.

2. Interactive Exhibits & Farm Science

Along the tour route, kids can interact with hands-on displays that are fun and educational.

  • Pretend to milk a mock dairy cow.

  • Learn how much feed a cow eats daily.

  • Explore interactive touchscreens detailing local family farm history.

3. Complimentary Cheese Tasting

At the end of the self-guided tour, visit the sampling station where staff hand out samples of signature Tillamook cheeses (including Extra Sharp Cheddar and specialty curds).

We’re big fans of the white cheddar here.

4. The Dining Hall & Ice Cream Counter

Finish your visit downstairs at the Dining Hall and Ice Cream Counter. The café is open daily 10 a.m.–6 p.m., and you can download the menu here.

  • Food: Fresh cheese curds, gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, and mac & cheese.

  • Ice Cream: More than 30 flavors available by the scoop or in flights.

5. The Gift Shop

You’ve already added a creamery and cheese factory tour to your vacation itinerary. Why not go all out and celebrate the occasion with a visit to the on-site gift shop? You can preview the fun merchandise, gifts, and snacks to take home. Who doesn’t want a butter coffee cup or cheese loaf stuffie.

Special Considerations for Parents

  • The entire creamery is ADA and stroller accessible, so don’t worry about bringing the stroller. Elevators will help you get around.

  • The ice cream line can get long. Summer visitors can look for an express kiosk located outside.

  • Planning to buy goodies to go? Bring a cooler bag with ice packs to make sure they make it back to the hotel with you—without melting.

  • Traveling by air? You can also visit the Tillamook Market at the Portland Airport.
